Had the pleasure of meeting Hyrum Joe while in Santa Fe around the 17th of August 2010 while he was completing a wonderful trading post painting. His work is delightfully historic, telling a wonderful story with great artistic skill. He noted that E Foutz had helped his father at the Shiprock Trading Post as he began his creation of his wonderful, prize winning works. A young man with great skill & soul.

Maple is a very dense wood, hard to carve. It dulls carving tools quickly. Maple carvings are uncommon. Here is an amazing example of one, and it takes full advantage of maple's ability to hold detail.
Noor Singh Khalsa says...
"Turned wood" does not begin to describe this. It is obviously made painstakingly from glued, segmented rings. But what of the textured, unpolished portion? The photograph does not reveal its attributes, but there is a tantalizing glimpse of striations on the far left.

The only word I find upon my lips is "Amazing." No other artist of your craft can match the harmonic balance that resonates between the pieces of each whole. Lavrio is a master alchemist and has no other to rival his art and craft. It is my honor to wear his work.
Clendon Webb says...
Saw one of the pieces in a June ad in American Art Collector and was immediately drawn to it. Unfortunate family matters caused a lapse in persuing information about it further, until last night. I somehow had a vision of the painting and could not remember which magazine or month I had seen the painting. After pouring through about 20 magazines issues over the last 4 months I located the right month and magazine. What is it they say about things that are meant to be. Don't know what will be the outcome, just wanted to say that when a piece of art speaks to one's heart and spirit, it truly does.
Anna and Charlie Wilson says...

Your work is awe inspiring, I have the good fortune to own one of your large paintings of Taos Pueblo, which I have visited many times, the lovely pastels with the dark underpainting gives the depth of being there on my old adobe wall. David Bradley's work offers viewers a visually powerful, brilliantly detailed insight to the contemporary struggle of Native American peoples. The paintings are simply beautiful, the colors vibrant and light-filled, the images at once caustic, yet gentle, and caring. Bradley's intellect and palette are important to the art world and the social evolution of American life. Keep on truckin' Mr. B!

I have always regretted not buying Washi with the paper samples when I lived in Santa Barbara.
And I still have one of your Medicine Shirt prints under glass (on my desktop -- wooden desktop, not computer) and a returned card I sent to you, probably 20 years ago.
Happy to see you are still doing work with paper.
Me, too...paper and silk and sometimes poetry. But I sorta lost my way in Australia. I think/hope that is changing.

I am a native Santa Fean who has always had an intense appreciation for the beauty of New Mexico. It was in my early twenties that I first came into contact with Doug West's work.
When I saw his images I was blown away -- the vision and beauty of his art resonated with my own visceral experiences of this landscape we call the Land of Enchantment. Since that time my love for his work has grown in ever increasing levels of appreciation.
Thank you Doug for your inspiration and the beauty of your work.
Most sincerely,
Rey De Lupos

Dear Tony,
I am particularly fascinated by your charcoal/mixed media paintings on paper. When viewing the above before reading the title I was thinking this is a creation story, creating order out of chaos. Very expressionistic and so immensely powerful. If I had this work in my possession I would never tire of looking at it and find new images to fascinate me all the time.
I am a BFA student and have to write an essay on postmodernism and curate (in my mind only) an exhibition of 5 artists and write a curator's essay 600-8-- words long. The above will be in my curated show. I could write 800 words just about your work only.
I wish you good luck and thousands and thousands of more creative hours so we, the public, can enjoy what you have created.
Susy

Thank you for sharing your art pieces -- and that's what they are; not just jewelry, but also art. I really like combination of color and form (be it fluid, solid, solemn, mysterious, or lively), as complemented by each of their names. They all paint vivid pictures in my imagination -- brings me back to the wonderfully simple but strikingly organic movement in some Sesame Street's animation segments that I still remember to this day.

Shirley Keller says...
Very inspiring to see the level of detail Tammy works in. I am relatively new to pottery. Faces speak to me and my pottery friends keep trying to get me to branch out from masks, but I hear the voices and must answer. I am not a detailed person, so to see the quality Tammy achieves is adding an inspiring push to move to a new level of work. Thank you for this lovely web site. To hear Tammy speak of her work is wonderful, and to hear the exploration never ends is fun to think about. I started art late in life so it is unrealistic to reach the level Tammy is at, but still, the connection is felt. It's never too late, we are never too old, because life is a gift to explore.
Susan Nicholson says...
Dear Tony,
I've only "met" you through your videos, which I find myself searching for after seeing the "Underworldness" one at the Heard Museum. I'm deeply touched by your art in all its forms, but particularly the black and white. I dabble in many art forms (mostly weaving), but your work has actually inspired me to paint for the first time in my life. It's wonderful that you can talk with your audiences while creating such incredible stuff without missing a beat. Thank you for all your beautiful, inspiring work, and please come back to SOFA Chicago next year so I can come to see you!

Comment:
I saw my first piece of Preston Singletary glass at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA yesterday. It's an absolutely gorgeous raven. Mr. Singletary is an extraordinary artist--in a class by himself. It's my hope that he doesn't become as commercialized as Dale Chihuly. Each of his pieces has an individual presence. Again - breathtakingly beautiful. The most exciting art I have seen in a very long time. It made my heart sing!
Maurice Kline says...
This piece has a light hearted, yet elegant form. The use of color is very unusual, especilly for a glass form. Very unusual, very beautiful.
KBeardsley says...
I looked at this painting a few days ago in Santa Fe and I believe it the most interesting and beautiful picture I have never seen. It looks like dreams that need to be explained to me.

My highlight of Spanish Market was the Friday reception at Blue Rain Gallary in Santa Fe. Being able to view the works of Gustavo Goler, and Jim Vogel. What a magnificent composition! This may be the best Vogel I have ever seen. And the frame is perfect for it--not at all overwhelming--an excellent choice.
Richard Zane Smith says...
I think of cities as vulnerable places,
places where people could panic if
food was not delivered by trucks
or when power failures wear out
even a heros patience...
I'm not a doom and gloomer
I just like being away
from such man-made places
Richard Zane Smith says...
imagine a pool of water and fossil stones
I love to follow the creeks
and wandering and winding i find secret pools
or hidden rock gardens of incredible beauty
and in one flash flood a creek bed is cleared,
new boulders, and new swirls of sand and gravel
as a record ,a testimony of time and endless change
Richard Zane Smith says...
Reviving our Wyandot language has been a passion of mine
also to draw inspiration from my ancient Wyandot ancestors.
this piece combines Wyandot form
and its castellation rim with the ancient ancestors of the Pueblo peoples whose corrugated ware still dot the ground in the southwest.
I love to blend ancient techniques of this land and to come up with something that feels as if it has life
Our Life is actually that meeting place of past ancestors and our future descendants
Richard Zane Smith says...
Co-creating along with the action of nature
this is a time in my life to occaisionally let the materials
have a voice in themselves and not always be trying to
overpower the clay forcing it by my own minds eye...
Its difficult for us perfectionists to step back...
to allow clay to remain clay
I love finding these roots with rocks imbedded.
Its spring time, warm enough to wade the creeks, looking for such treasured pieces of wood and to keep an eye out for
Water moccasins who also enjoy the roots along the banks.
I saw six of them last time i was out in waders.
Richard Zane Smith says...
I call this one "Handled Piece" as a bit of a pun.
I couldn't believe my fortune to stumble on this incredible root
on the edge of a torn out bank out here on Sycamore Creek.
I doubt I will ever find another so hand like in all its ways.
The pot was made especially for the wood piece itself.
An alternative way to display it is to place the vessel on a base
and place "the hand" so it is reversed, with its thumb in the air
and sort of cupping the "fingers" around it.
I was a little sad to see this one go...
Richard Zane Smith says...
This particular piece i did just as the spring colors all around us were replacing the gray and bare woods of winter.
In just a few weeks the hardwood forests that are so still and somber have become a busy force of bursting life .
the adders tongue shoot up starlike blossoms under the still bare canopy of oaks and the trillium and May apple send spikes unfurling as they push through the decomposing leaves from another season. Then comes the redbud and the dogwoods.
here I tried to contrast the green vines of new life with the bare trees showing winter coming to an end
Richard Zane Smith says...
this was a fun piece to create.
I call it simply "Crazy Arrow"
the piece of root i found along Spring River north of here,
the arrow points i made out of local chert, and the turkey wing fletching was from feathers given to me by tribal members of the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma .
The clay is native Oklahoma clay dug from a ranch in the Vinita area. The owners of the ranch are Cherokee and I'm so pleased
they so willingly share with me and even attending the prayers before the digging of clay starts.
and sometimes sharing a pipe of traditional tobacco.

Very beautiful work. It has some of the charactristics of a self-taught artist but the style is very personal because of the subject matter, but the landscapes are very sophisticated. Wonderful execution.

Kitty Zahradka says...
This is a very interesting piece. All things are inter related with nature, human form and the crow from the animal world. The subtle colors are beautiful and the bone-like rungs of the ladder are so connected to the past. I can't say any more until Deborah goes into her articulate speaking about it. I hope she will do that.
Melanie Lux says...
Mateo had some wonderful things in a show on war in Santa Fe. Why don't you carry more contemporary imaging of his? I found it to be a nice alternative to traditional (and expected) native themes.

Your paintings are very beautiful and must have a personal meaning behind them all. It must take alot of thought, im guessing you probebly stare at a blank wall at church, and the picture flows threw your mind. Thats what helps me paint.
Calvin Nickell says...
What an interesting idea, to join a wooden piece for a handle with leather to fasten the handle to the pot. I've never seen anything like this and I wanted to let someone know that I appreciate seeing functional art at its best.
hunter-gatherer says...
This blanket was designed by George Hunt Jr., a Northwest Coast artist from the Kwakiutl tribe. The original limited edition series of the blanket, made in 1995 for the American Indian College Fund, consisted of 1200 blankets. Each blanket came with a stitched on label showing the blanket's number in the series(such as 200/1200).
Reproductions of this blanket were made about 10 years later and were also sold to benefit the American Indian College Fund. Per their website "Tribute to My Grandmother Mary Ebbets, Anislaga" was designed by George Hunt, Jr., a renowned woodcarver of the Kwakiutl tribe of Vancouver Island. Mr. Hunt, Jr. dedicated the design to his great-great-great-grandmother, Mary Ebbets, or Anislaga. As Tlingit legend has it, Anislaga was the living link between the ancient Tlingit culture and contemporary tribal weaving traditions. In ceremonies the blanket is "danced," bringing to life the story of how Mankind was taught to weave by Raven, Lynx, Sea Monster and Bear; when worn, these sacred images surround the wearer."
Kristine Andra says...
This is an exceptional piece. Unique to Bruce's work in the sense that it could symbolize the many challenges we face in our own unique spiritual quests for truth. It is both strong and gentle. In my opinion, Bruce LaFountain is one the best scluptors in the world. Having been and lived in Italy where many artists have their pieces constructed and watching the skill of these people and the process that is involved in obtaining marble, which few can work with; To watch Bruce LaFountain work with stone is an art in and of itself. Few have remained true to the craftmanship and Bruce is one of those who can transcend all barriers and will exempfy this within his work. Although, many pieces "appear" similar to the untrained eye, if we look beyond the surface of Bruce's work we will see he will show us that life will reflect art and art will reflect life of which neither are static.
Carol Pelton-Wagner says...
You're still an amazing painter -- as I remember you years ago when I lived in Taos. Just thought about you today out of the blue. Carol
Michelle Lafountain says...

Unbelievable evolution of an artist. I bought a tiny piece with a single bear paw many years ago at the Eight Northern Pueblo show. Even as a teenager she showed a genius for form and proportion. Very few artists reach this level of complexity and still produce stunningly elegant pieces. It is a joy to see!
